Crestview News Bulletin Sports Reporter
The Crestview News Bulletin is seeking a sports reporter to cover athletics in northern Okaloosa County, Florida. We’re looking for an energetic, highly driven candidate, who wants to go beyond the box score while covering sports of all ages.
This position includes covering three local high schools, which includes game night coverage from football to volleyball to softball to baseball and everything in between. But we don’t want to just write who scored touchdowns on Friday night. We also want to focus on the actual athletes, writing compelling features that allow the community to get to know the local stars beyond the field or the court.
This position is very community focused, meaning we don’t want to overlook middle school or youth athletics either. The successful candidate will be the go-to journalist in northern Okaloosa County for all things athletics and will be able to write well on deadline pressure.
The chosen candidate will also factor into other coverage for the newspaper as well, including being assigned education and faith features that won’t be sports focused. However, the majority of this job is focused on athletics in Okaloosa County, Florida.
You’ll be joining a fun team that enjoys the work it’s doing in the Crestview community.
In recent years, the Crestview News Bulletin was sold to a community-minded owner. Another newspaper owned by the same owner has won best in the state seven times and is followed by other journalists and publishing companies for its innovative approach. Many of the initiatives have become adopted by other weeklies and large dailies throughout the nation. Basically, we are trailblazers and change agents.
A judge from Pennsylvania put it best; “If all newspapers looked (and read) like this one, there would be no more talk of newspapers dying.”
Our reporters are hardworking, self-motivated, and able to write stories beyond meeting coverage and profiles. Some night and weekend work is required. We will consider recent journalism graduates who have completed an internship at another daily or weekly newspaper, with strong writing samples. Also, we have had great success with broadcast journalists, so feel free to apply.
Concerned about advancement at a community paper? Don’t be. We have plenty of room for advancement, and we are high achievers.
Experience with InDesign, web, and video is a plus. We offer a community with a casual, low-ego, yet passionately dedicated work environment and competitive pay.
Please follow directions: Interested applicants will send a cover letter that explains what they have to offer to their community as a journalist, a resume, and three clips to jobs@crestviewbulletin dot com. (We spelled it out to prevent spam – but you know what to do.)
